Storyline
Nationally acclaimed evangelist John Luther is the last obstacle in the way of sweeping religious reform in the States. When a U.S. Senator and Luther's own supporters abduct and frame him in the murder of an innocent teenage girl, an unprecedented era of persecution is unleashed. Out on personal recognizance, Luther escapes police surveillance in search of the truth. And suddenly a once-normal life is targeted by a team of ex-military operatives who wage a relentless campaign to eliminate the incriminating evidence. As evangelist turned fugitive, Luther vows to expose anyone involved with, or profiting from, the girl's murder. It's a mission that brings him face-to-face with the coming storm of persecution that will threaten the entire American Christian community. Written by Daniel Lusko

  1. I saw this movie at AMC, right next to my house, last night. This movie is about 2 years overdue. Somebody had guts to write this and with the attacks on the constitution and core founding beliefs in this country....the actors, frankly had guts to even act in it, audits on the way for each. The media depicted, is about right to real life in the good old tainted USA anymore, and this movie simply brings out some of what is already happening, followed by a prediction of what may follow. It's a thrill a minute and well acted. The writers created a masterpiece as far as the script writing goes. With conservatives (fiscal or other wise) being attacked all over the globe for their personal beliefs, for real in real time for no less than 7 years now, the 'predictions' of Persecuted' concerning the future are not deeply far fetched. For the first recent time in huge numbers; Catholics are already being hunted down and killed all over the globe, nobody looking concerned. Why would the concerns 'Persecuted' is obviously trying to bring out, be sloughed off as hog wash by the left;oh wait, I know why. It is an important movie, definitely Christian based (I am a fiscal conservative), but hey, 'Persecuted' simply denotes what their Bible says is going to happen and they think they are seeing that start now. They probably are. I found the movie to be not only highly entertaining; even if things turn around, and their predictions are wrong. The actors do a superb job, the plot is deep and non typical. Any really scathing reviews you see on here, have to be the hard left which will pee its pants over this one. This was a very relevant thriller and it was good, unlike 'Noah', which defamed the guy, was disrespectful to history and a truly sick thing to do; although the acting was good in it:) I liken 'Persecuted" to 'Bourne' but the frame is even more sinister, or to a Tom Cruise flick with less sci fi; or to The Italian Job without a frame twist, except, the left itself, IS Ed Norton. Thus the deep abiding love, 'Ed' will have for the movie.

  2. Despite the IMDb terrorists (aka trolls) trying to influence your viewing decisions, "Persecuted" turned out to be an entertaining, moderately well-made movie deserving of your consideration, and an excellent start for a new branch in Christian movie-making: the political thriller.

John Luther is a respected religious figure with a rough beginning in life before finding God despite having a priest for a father (the estimable Fred Thompson). Luther is the front man for a ministry organization that may be performing adequately financially, perhaps faltering a bit. A "friend" of Luther's, Senator Harrison, has proposed a new bill that imposes the equivalent of the old "fairness doctrine" law from radio, consequently forcing a dilution of the gospel because, hey, there are "several paths to God," right?

Luther resists the senator's entreaties for him to woo his organization's members to support the bill. In refusing to support the senator, he becomes a target and the intrigue ensues (making clear the reason Billy Graham had round-the-clock assistants).

The great thing about this type of movie, though, is that it is a story, not a sermon. You may find some continuity errors and some plot annoyances -- my favorite is pressing the "down" elevator button to go from the first floor to the fifth. But at least for me, they did not make the film unenjoyable, although in full honesty I was not deeply moved at the end.

My point with the warnings is to set expectations. If you enjoy intrigue movies, I recommend it and think you will enjoy seeing it. The trolls are desperate and their early voting has as of this writing caused the laughable score, but if you look at the statistical breakdown of the votes you can see the mountains of irrational, baseless "1" voting. Get real, trolls.

Hollywood admittedly has years, hundreds of movies, and millions of dollars' worth more experience. But they also produce objectionable content, as well as holding viewpoints antithetical to my own. This is movie #1 of this Christian sub-type (that I'm aware of, anyway). I look at it this way: I enjoyed the film; AND, it is going to get better as more releases of this type come out.

If the trolls scare you, hold off and let them persecute "Persecuted." But if you have your own mind, don't let them make it up for you; you'll have fun and be glad you went.

(I have no connection in any way to the movie or its cast/crew/finances.)

  3. While many are bashing Persecuted (2014) for being a paranoid Christian fantasy about religious folks being locked up in concentration camps, this film is nothing of the sort.

Persecuted is more of an action-chase thriller film. The plot concerns a young minister who, after a personal falling out with a powerful United States Senator, is framed for murder and goes "on the run" from a bevy of knife, sword, bomb, and gun-wielding bad guys for ninety action-packed minutes.

This minister is no slouch, however, being able to handle weapons from a bo-staff to firearms with authority and aplomb. These characteristics are a conscious homage to the cult classic Billy Jack (1971), in which a peaceful outsider is so harassed by the evil powers-that-be until he explodes in a fury of ass-kicking hapkido fury.

Car chases, explosions, stunts, shootouts abound, with our hero handing out not a few kung-fu ass-whoopins along the way. The special effects were surprisingly passable given this film's limited budget.

Senator Fred Thompson even gets involved in the film's climatic car- helicopter chase, wildly popping off shotgun rounds hanging out of a chased 1978 Buick 225 while dressed as a Catholic priest.

The must see film of the Summer.
